Fotonovelas: Healthy and Happy Families Start Here

The “Healthy and Happy Families Start Here”/“Una Familia Feliz y Saludable Comienza Aquí” fotonovela series is available for distribution. Created as part of CalMHSA’s Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Initiative – Latino Family Outreach Project, the series includes three fotonovelas created to help increase awareness of mental health challenges and promote understanding and acceptance among Latino families with young children.

Fotonovela booklets are 5 in. x 7 in. Each fotonovela booklet (Education, Faith and Health) is inclusive of BOTH English and Spanish content.

The Know the Signs suicide prevention campaign team implemented a variety of activities to facilitate the adaptation of suicide prevention materials for the Vietnamese community in California.  The process included a workgroup of statewide stakeholders who guided the development of the materials and offered insights on the population’s cultural perspectives on suicide prevention efforts and effective approaches to reach potential helpers in the Vietnamese community.

Suicide prevention outreach materials to reach Spanish-speaking community members

In July 2013, a project was established to develop targeted suicide prevention outreach materials to reach the Spanish-speaking community, with emphasis on community members with low literacy language skills. A framework to guide this effort was developed that included gathering input from stakeholders throughout California including county and state agencies–totaling 35 statewide contacts and five focus groups with 41 community health workers (Promotores) across five counties.
